1999 Red Bordeaux

The following were my impressions of a range of classed growth 1999 Union des Grands Crus clarets, tasted in May 2001. The Union membership is, like everything in Bordeaux, intensely political and unfortunately some of most important wines are not shown at this event. (Top wines tend to refuse to travel before they are safely in bottle.)

They're listed in declining order of preference and then alphabetically, within appellation. This vintage will presumably always be overshadowed by its successor, and by its predecessor on the right bank. Over-extraction and over-ripe fruit plague too many wines but Pauillac, St Julien and...
