Yesterday we saw preparations for the first big public wine event on the slopes of Mount Etna designed to show the differences between wines made in different districts on the northern face of this still very much active volcano. I asked when it had last erupted and was told "January".

On the weekend we were there it had recently snowed heavily but the sky was a brilliant blue so there were many happy skiers. This is apparently one of the very few places in the world where you can ski looking at the sea. (The Cedars of Lebanon is another.)

I'll be publishing my tasting notes later this week. The wine quality and style was very varied but it was clear that Etna has massive potential to produce really distinctive, unexpectedly refreshing wines.
