Yorkshire police need help

5 Jun 2008 by JR
Oo, I do like a good mystery. And I also like snooping in other people’s cellars. Here’s a tale that incorporates both.

Police in Northallerton have issued an appeal to restaurateurs, hoteliers and wine merchants  following the theft of £60,000 worth of fine wine from a house in the area.

Between 6pm on Saturday 31 May and 11am the following day, thieves broke into a rural residential property near Northallerton.  After gaining access to the cellar, they stole wine which included the following:

Ch d’Yquem 1997
Ch Gloria 2000, 2001, 2004
Ch Beychevelle 2000, 2001,2004
Ch Lynch Bages 2001, 2004
Ch Talbot 2001
Ch Palmer 1995, 2000
Ch Latour 1995, 1997 (magnum)
Ch Gloria 1996 (double magnum)
Thelema Reserve Merlot 2003
Rustenberg, Peter Barlow 2004
Rustenberg, John X Merriman 2004
Rustenberg Five Soldiers
Ornellaia 1997.

Due to the quality of the wine, officers believe it is likely that it will be disposed of through specialist markets and are appealing to wine merchants, hoteliers and restaurateurs to be on their guard if they are offered any of these wines for sale and to contact police immediately.

Anyone with any information should call DC Jason Roper at Northallerton CID on 0845 60 60 247. Alternatively you can call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800-555-111.

This may serve as a timely reminder for all of us to review the security of wine collections. Only yesterday I discovered the keys to one of my two cellars sitting in the outside lock.
