The reason I'm in California is that on Saturday night I had the great honour of chairing a panel of old friends of the late Robert Mondavi at a celebration of his life at Copia in Napa. The tributes to him preceded a meal cooked by chefs Charlie Trotter, Alice Waters, Gary Danko, Julian Serrano and Jean-Georges Vongerichten and some great Napa Valley wines provided by Duckhorn, Robert Mondavi Winery (now owned by Constellation), Schramsberg, Stag's Leap Wine Cellars, Staglin, Joseph Phelps, Rubicon, Charles Krug, Opus One and Continuum, Tim Mondavi's new enterprise .
