In a nutshell: Red wines barely known outside Germany.

Main grape: Spätburgunder (red).

Germans, and practically no one else, associate this very small northerly wine region with slate-warmed red, sometimes slightly sweet wines made mainly by co-operatives from Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir) vines. Some notable exceptions exist and there is currently an intereest in the early-ripening Fruhburg⁞under grape. Meyer-Näkel is the star here.
