Very little wine leaves this alpine region on the French border but it is fertile hunting ground for lovers of ancient grape varieties, both red and white, a mix from Piedmont, the Rhône, Burgundy and Switzerland as well as some intriguing local specialities, such as Petit Rouge and Fumin, which are increasingly valued and understood. Chambave, Morgex, Nus and La Salle are all names found on the labels of these wines. The generally light bodied reds and whites have more in common with the wines of France’s Savoie or Switzerland than anywhere else in Italy.
