Is there no end to Berry Bros’ imperialistic ambitions? Not content with owning most of St James’s in London, they are already oldtimers in both Hong Kong and Ireland with a thriving retail presence in each market – and now they are concretising their expansion into Japan – a market that has been a little quiet of late but seems set for a resurgence. Berry Bros & Rudd has been selling wine to Japanese customers, both private and trade, for a number of years. Indeed it was the Japanese who were rumoured to be the most enthusiastic purchasers of incredibly expensive bottles from what was once Berrys’ thriving airside wine...
