Reds, whites and blues
Yesterday Hugh Johnson and I acted as judges in the annual Oxford v Cambridge wine tasting match for students at these rival universities.
The teams had to identify as closely as possible 12 wines served blind, some of which were extremely challenging. A particularly tart, tough, thin Toro, for instance, and a particularly rich Lugana. Hugh and I tasted the wines blind ourselves so that we could reward those we felt made well-educated but erroneous guesses. Chianti gained a few marks in the case of the Toro, for instance, and Soave was deemed a pretty good guess at the Lugana.
