Impressed by the character and quality of Belgian beers on my arrival in Bruges , I rated nearly all as excellent. Only later did I learn what quality really is, so many of my early notes are somewhat over-generous. Looking back at the first beers tasted, even Leffe Blond and Hoegaarden received three stars. Conversely, I later learned to appreciate some beers that I did not initially enjoy. As a professional wine taster, I immediately disliked beers that were musty and overtly acidic, but...
