The worst job I ever had was on a municipal landfill near Bedford. It was literally rubbish. What had once been a stone quarry became so overfilled that a mountain of garbage was steadily rising from the ground and with the faintest breeze, trash flew everywhere. To catch it, they put up enormous nets. What got past the nets was collected by hand. By my hand, specifically. At the end of the shift I returned it to the summit where it promptly blew over the nets again, ready to be collected the following day. It was like being in a modern version of the eternal torment of Sisyphus. In context, then, my work at the vineyard this week...
