Earlier this week, Richard Hemming reported on some of the great-value Spanish reds he tasted at this year's large generic tasting of wines from Spain (pictured here - spot the wine trade figures hard at work).
As with all these big wine fairs, the sheer scope can be overwhelming and it always helps to devise a clear tasting strategy in advance. Since Rioja and Ribera del Duero are so well known, I decided to concentrate on a host of DOs in the far north-west of Spain such as Rias Baixas, Bierzo and the like, and some wines from other lesser known areas such as Mallorca and Mentrida.
