Those who have been following my tweets at the bottom of our home page, or at twitter.com/jancisrobinson will have seen my increasingly badly spelt reports from last night’s Decanter World Wine Awards dinner at the Royal Opera House here in London (see what the Hamlyn Hall looked like before we all invaded left).
One of the most popular wins was purple pager Jamie Hutchinson of The Sampler who scooped both Small Independent Merchant of the Year and the Readers' Award for Best Small Wine Merchant. See below for his victory performance as editor Guy Woodward announces the results of this particular tiny slice of the awards ceremony. Runner up was Caves de Pyrène and there was a special mention for Palmers of Bridport of which I was regrettably ignorant until last night.
And listen to see which runner-up in the Independent Merchant of the Year failed to sign up for this lavish event, and to (almost) see which worthy provincial wine merchant won the award, and did send a representative to collect it. Alas I cut this little film off too soon - the very worthy winner was....Tanners. Apologies, Salopians.
There was rather a dearth of winemaker attendees, I thought - though I was delighted to see Johan Donabaum of Austria pick up the trophy for best Riesling. Notable high scorers for fizz included Charles and Piper Heidsiecks.
Full results for the wines now online at decanter.com and the merchant results are here. Real hardcore followers of wine awards ceremonies will be at the international Wine Challenge dinner tonight. Not me, so you will be spared a breathless online report.
