Sainsbury's - 25% off

2 Nov 2009 by Jancis Robinson

Attention all British bargain hunters. UK supermarket Sainsbury's is lopping a quarter off the price of all its wines and champagnes from tomorrow for a week, so long as six bottles are bought.

I published tasting notes on almost 100 of their offerings on Friday, and managed to find 15 I thought were good value at their regular price. This means that there should be some real bargains to be had at the special discount that applies 3-10 Nov. There is also a fair old quantity of very dull wine, but overall I thought their selection had improved quite a bit since I last tasted it in May. This offer applies to all stores apparently.

I would draw your attention in particular to Sainsbury's, Taste the Difference 2008 Muscadet-Sèvre et Maine Sur Lie, a wine from the domaine of Jean Douillard, packed in one of the new, ecologically senstiive 280g bottles. The price comes down from an entirely reasonable £5.99 a bottle to a silly £4 a bottle.  I would also recommend Moraia, Pietracupa 2007 Bolgheri for serious wine lovers. This is effectively a well-made Supertuscan and the price comes down from £11.99 to £8 a bottle for a wine that, unusually on the shelf of a British supermarket, seems to have real potential to age.
