Riesling - the nine-decade marvel
Purple pager, and reporter on all things Germanic for Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, David Schildknecht asked the team at Robert Weil in the Rheingau to organise a vertical of both dry wines and Spätlesen from their most famous vineyard. On Wednesday evening, the Weil team obligingly opened two bottles of each wine and invited more than 40 of us to share the experience of a panoply of vintages from Gräfenberg, behind the Rhineside village of Kiedrich, back to 1917 in the case of the dry wines and 1921 in the case of the Spätlesen. Both of these two most senior vintages were complete marvels - though quite unlike the younger wines...
