Top sommeliers confront Nature
14 Mar 2011 by Jancis Robinson

Last week we published an article about Gérard Basset and his search for replacements for his own award-winning sommeliers. You can see him in the short film below along with many other high achievers in the world of British wine service at a presentation one Saturday morning last month of natural wines by their principal protagonist in the UK, Douglas Wregg of Les Caves de Pyrène, at the new Fulham wine emporium, Vagabond Wines.

He's the quiet one with the big dark moustache. Others round the table include Robert Giorgione, Isa Bal of The Fat Duck, Gearoid Devaney of Flint Wines, Ronan Sayburn of Hotel du Vin, wine writer Tim Atkin MW in cap, Doug Wregg and Xavier Rousset of 28-50.  I asked Doug what reaction he had had after the tasting and he reports, 'Gérard has been incredibly positive and will be doing the Natural Wine promotion[{related to London's first Natural Wine Fair]; the others were sceptical beforehand and probably still are. One has to agree to differ. Matthieu lists some natural wines. Ronan is an agnostic. Xavier is against them.'

See here for more detail on the 16 natural wines presented at this ground-breaking tasting, and for thousands of words from Douglas Wregg on them and the natural wine movement.
