Where am I?

I mentioned in yesterday's musings on how I decide where and when to travel (When RSVP = yes) that I found myself in a mystery location in the depths of the Portuguese countryside last Thursday night.

After a three-hour drive from Lisbon, I arrived in complete darkness at a hotel that, I was told, had opened only the previous day so could not really get my bearings. The next morning I ventured out, found my fellow wine writer Tim Atkin MW taking photographs of the rather beautiful hotel (very old building part transformed into hip hotel), and went for a walk.

This is what I saw - and just listen to those birds...

Back in the hotel I finally managed to get my hands on a map and discovered I was in the tiny historic hillside village of Linhares da Beira on the northern flanks of the Serra da Estrella mountain range. You might like to check out the Pousada de Linhares for accommodation, should you ever find yourself in the far north east of Portugal, south of the Douro Valley in the Beira Interior.
