Waiheke Island - an introduction

See also my tasting notes on the Waiheke Island wines. The overall quality of the wines I tasted over a two-day period on Waiheke Island was exceptionally high, demonstrating the prescience and hard work of those such as Kym and Jeannette Goldwater who pioneered winegrowing here in the late 70s and early 80s. The main impetus for my trip to New Zealand last November was to judge in the Air New Zealand Wine Awards 2012 but I was able to visit Waiheke before the judging started and then fly down to Canterbury on the South Island after the competition was over. (My report on Waipara and North Canterbury will follow in due course.)...
