The academic year for my practical-only resit course has now begun. Several MWs have recently said to me that passing both exams first time is ultimately disadvantageous: that by retaking the practical, your tasting acumen will surpass the level of those who passed first time, that the extra study develops enhanced analytical capability and advanced levels of understanding – the MW equivalent of enlightenment.

Incidentally, all the MWs who told me this had themselves retaken their tasting. What an extraordinary coincidence!
