France's secret South West

The word ‘toothsome’ could have been coined for the wines of South West France, a Pyrenean nursery for diverse and attention-grabbing vine varieties. The flavours can be wild and dramatic, rich and fresh, fine and arresting. If the wines are so much less familiar to the world than those of neighbouring power-base Bordeaux, then historico-political reasons are largely to blame. However, this means that they are generally very good value and a perfect antidote for a slightly jaded palate.
