29 Jun Early figures from the organisers of Vinexpo suggest that total visitor numbers were down by 8% to 46,000 from 134 countries in 2009. At the last Vinexpo in 2007 there were 50,000 visitors from 154 countries.

Here Ronan Laborde,  managing director of Ch Clinet in Pomerol, gives us a participant's view of this year's Vinexpo. Numbers were definitely down, and the French attitude to competition may need a little re-engineering, he thinks.

I caught him at fine wine traders Bordeaux Index, who, incidentally, had been tasting a range of 2007s from Harmand Geoffroy, the Gevrey grower  I cited recently in  Finding the wine list bargains.
