Tim Atkin is one of Britain's more amusing and less self-important wine writers. He is a fellow-masochist and recently qualified as a Master of Wine when he didn't really need to. He is also The Observer's wine columnist and has just resigned as editor of Harpers wine trade weekly (which he revamped brilliantly) now that it has been rusticated to Swanley in Kent.

Doubtless we will see the results of his much-increased spare time between hard covers within a year or so but a more immediate result is Wine Uncorked, a six-part wine course at Bank restaurant near London's Aldwych on (the non-consecutive) Monday evenings 29 September, 6 October, 27 October, 10 November, 24 November and 8 December.

The subject matter looks good, comprehensive, relevant and perky. Classes start at 7pm in the private room with a lecture, six wines and suitable tapas to match them. The lot costs £250 per person which strikes me as pretty good value - provided you can get to each one and Bank aren't too stingy with either liquid or solid matter.

Reading between the lines it looks as though wholesaler Berkmann Wines will be supplying all the wines, which is far from a bad thing.
