29 November, London - News has just reached me that the grandest old man of wine died peacefully yesterday after a few days in hospital in London. Harry Waugh was 97, if memory serves. He led Harveys of Bristol into fine wine and in the middle years of this century trained almost everyone who was anyone in wine at the time. Michael Broadbent MW was just one of his juniors. No one who ever met him could fail to be impressed by his knowledge and impeccable manners. Even at this year's Master of Wine annual reception, his was the straightest back. You can see our 10-minute film about Harry's remarkable story at the end of the Vintners' Tales 1 video. His vinous spirit lives on in his daughter Harriet, who now tastes and writes about wine for Decanter Magazine.
