More murk

As a follow up to my long article on wine fraud, you may be interested to know about Christie’s April 27 sale in Los Angeles.
 
The catalogue carries a photograph of a handsome number, six, of magnums – yes, magnums – of Le Pin 1982, one of the rarer and more expensive wines in the world. Estimated sale price $60-100,000. ‘Property of a fine wine connoisseur.’
 
The Pin owners, the Thienponts, were suspicious about the squeaky clean look of these labels and questioned these wines with the auctioneer, only to be assured, in the short term at least...
