Great value from southern Italy

I recently tasted about 80 reds from southern Italy and the islands. These wines used typically IMHO to be either too alcoholic to drink with ease or vapid, over-produced commercial liquids bottled to a price, but I was impressed by how much more interesting and better balanced they seem with each succeeding vintage.   Of course there has a massive influx of expertise in to this fashionable region, with most of Italy's most garlanded consultant oenologists having a finger in several pies in this, the most dynamic half of Italy.
