A love of the alternative varieties that have the potential to make excellent wine has in no way diminished my enthusiasm and respect for the classic, more widely planted, so-called international varieties when they are grown on an appropriate site, well made, and when they succeed in expressing their region of origin while retaining certain distinguishing varietal features. 

Such classic wines are easily found in Western Australia, the area I focused on at London's Australia Day tasting in January – while Richard looked at these alternative varieties.
