What is Riesling in South Africa?

Tomorrow I will publish some enthusiastic tasting notes on a selection of top South African wines, some of which I believe represent real bargains.
 
My enthusiasm for the South African wine scene is somewhat tempered however by the fact that the Cape wine industry still hasn’t sorted out its Riesling nomenclature.
 
For years a very undistinguished vine variety, now abandoned in its native Landes in south west France, has been called South African Riesling, Cape Riesling and occasionally just Riesling in South Africa – just as the same variety used to be called Clare Riesling in Australia.
