Rare Krug magnums up for sale

17 Oct 2004 by JR

The Krug Family are donating six rare magnums of their famed Krug Collection to raise funds for the restoration of the famous statue of La Reine de Sabat which graces the main door of Reims Cathedral where all but one of the Kings of France were crowned.

The six Krug lots consist of two magnums of each of the 1964, 1973 and 1979 vintages in their original wooden boxes. The Krug Collection 1964 magnums would make a seriously mouthwatering gift for friends or family celebrating a 40th anniversary before the end of the year.

Krug champagnes, especially in magnums kept forever in the cellars in Reims, have exceptional longevity and often seem much fresher than their age would suggest - perhaps partly because of their fermentation in small French oak casks (becoming increasingly fashionable in Champagne).

Remi Krug will sign personal Krug Collection certificates for the successful bidders of each lot which are to be auctioned by Christie’s in Paris next Wednesday 27 oct.

Christie’s have already begun accepting sealed and telephone bids for the Krug Collection Magnum Lots.   All enquiries should be directed to Christie’s Paris tel +33 1 40 76 83 97, at owiseman@christies.com or via www.christies.com
