What is the point of capsules?

Graham Pointer, Surrey: I'm lucky to have a few bottles of Ch Margaux 1996 sleeping peacefully for the next few years in a Eurocave fridge at home. Whilst inspecting them recently, I noticed that the top of one of the capsules was quite badly torn although the cork appeared healthy. If one ignores my absent mindedness in not spotting this before, do I have any cause for concern if I plan to leave the bottle untouched for a few years yet? Do the capsules perform any useful function or are they purely decorative? me: I would say that if the bottle is to remain in a fridge, you needn't worry a jot. There was a time when capsules...
