Strange new grappas

I know this site is for all things vinous; however, I hope you can still help us with our grappa query, given there is a connection of sorts.
We are a little confused about the supposedly new styles of grappa that are being distilled directly from wine (as opposed to being distilled from grape pomace). Can you give us any background to this new style, and are they in fact still grappa? I've seen a couple of grappas in wine shops here that say, for example Grappa di Brunello di Montalcino....
