Is it Pinot Noir, Pinot noir, or pinot noir?

Michel Alberty, Chicago: I have finally snapped. I just read an article where ‘Pinot Noir’," ‘Pinot noir’, and ‘pinot noir’ were used interchangeably. I mean that literally. There was no detectable pattern. I have read several different views on the capitalisation (as opposed to chaptalisation) of grape varietals over the years. What guidelines do you use when deciding whether or not to capitalise a grape varietal when writing? Cheers. me: There are several different conventions on this and I feel that following one of them consistently, unlike the author of the article that broke you in two, is reasonable behaviour....
