New World v Old World Pinot clones
David Graves, Saintsbury, Carneros: I wanted to expand a little of the clonal story of Anglophone New World Pinot Noir . "Pommard" (UC Davis 4) was collected by University of California Davis viticulturist H P Olmo in Burgundy after World War II. It is now widely planted in Oregon and also in cooler California (Pinotlandia). Most accessions to the UC Davis collection were at one point or another "heat treated" (grown at elevated temperatures) with the goal of eliminating various plant viruses that got into Vitis vinifera from grafting with rootstocks.
