J J Prüm 's unexpectedly wonderful 1987
Paul Gaston, Charlottesville, VA: Last night we drank a delicious bottle of 1987 J J Prüm Wehlener Sonnenuhr Spätlese. The year is rated as a wash-out, no stars from Michael Broadbent. The only tasting note I’ve seen on this wine, from 1990, is wholly negative: “bone dry and austere”. What a great and pleasant surprise! Manfred Prüm apparently released the wine only last year, after a 15-year rest in his cellars, and my merchant (along with others) bought many bottles ex-cellar. One learns once again that patience can be rewarded and that great winemakers can make excellent wine in the most troubling of years. me:...
