How do Merlots around the world compare?

Carol Horton, Rome: I have just been drinking a Merlot from Venice and it is quite light. I wonder how Merlots from various countries compare - for example, Chilean vs. American vs. Italian?! Or how do Merlots from the north of Italy compare to those from the south? me: Many red varietals from north east Italy are produced from very high-yielding vines, in a not-especially-warm climate which is why they are typically pretty light and thin. Inexpensive Chilean Merlots are often made from high-yielding vines, but benefit from masses of sunshine and warmth so tend to be stronger and deeper-coloured (thicker skins).  There is also...
