Why does bordeaux last longer?

Charles Mathis, Tennessee: Why do the wines of Bordeaux generally age longer than wines from other regions of the world?  I would suspect this question was only including wines made from primarily Cabernet Sauvignon and the "Bordeaux blends" (left bank).  However, there are also wines from Bordeaux's right bank with a large percentage of Merlot or Cabernet Franc which also seem to have longer lives than wines from other regions of the world. I thought heritage, soil, and age of vines would be high on the list, but that seems too easy a deduction.  I did read in the Oxford Companion to Wine , that pH was also responsible, but I...
