Why should a 1989 Auslese be bitter?

Kevin Curran, Washington DC:   I recently opened a bottle of 1989 Burrweiler Schäwer Riesling Auslese from Herbert Mesmer.  The wine was still sweet, but there was an unpleasant bitterness to go with the rather one-dimensional flavour. A friend suggested the bitterness is from botrytis.  I have drank many more 1990 Auslesen than wines of that Prädikat level from 1989, and I have not encountered bitterness in any of the 1990s (which are consistently first rate Rieslings).  In your experience, do Spätlesen and Auslesen from a year marked by botrytis age differently than if from a year such as 1990 when botrytis was rare?  Might...
