Affording and drinking first growths
Kevin Curran, Washington DC: K&L, my beloved former employer, is forced to sell the 2004 Laville Haut Brion for $299 a bottle on pre-arrival. Clyde, the owner, told me he won't make much money on the 2004s. Your recent rhetorical question in Waiting for Ch Latour of "who will buy these wines [first growths] to drink?" seems spot on. I really wanted to buy Margaux and Latour this year, but I can't justify the expense. I have many wine-loving friends, but I don't know of one person who is buying first growths or, for that matter, Laville Haut Brion. What will Haut Brion Blanc cost? $500? How I wish I had been...
