Do halves really mature faster?

Tim James, Cape Town: I was skimming through David Lester's article on wine investment (though it's a topic that doesn't suit my beliefs or my pocket) and noticed the usual preference for magnums and the prohibition on half-bottles. I wonder how much this widespread expectation of wine maturing ruinously fastĀ in smaller formats is based on genuine experience or is another one of those things that everyone 'just knows'. If the more persuasive voices in the current debate over closures are correct, and the half-bottle is sealed with a good cork, it should surely be at no disadvantage (unless I'm even more confused by the debate than...
