Can Châteauneuf be elegant?
Piers Krause, Nottingham: Châteauneuf du Pape is one of my favourite wines. However, I think it is wrong to criticize this wine for not being elegant. It is not its character to be elegant and if one sought elegant wines one should go elsewhere. Do you agree? me: I get a sense of being drafted in to settle a bet. This question reminds me of the barrister friend who once pronounced, "to accuse a lawyer of being pompous is as to accuse a ballerina of being lissome". You're surely right: it is not the duty of a Châteauneuf to be elegant - although in my experience a really old example from a great vintage such as a 1967 Les...
