Steve Dutton, Germany: I read with great interest David [Schildknecht]'s really enjoyable comments on the German wine scene (I too had wondered where he had been). I think he is being unduly harsh however regarding German customers wanting certain things from their wines. Germans in general do not attach as much importance to fine dining as do, say, the French, Swiss, Austrians, Italians, etc, and per capita spending here on food and wine is among the lowest in Europe (average price paid for a bottle of wine is under 4 euros). But attitudes change, and German consumers have come a long way since 1980 when I remember...
