When did we discover the true identity of Zinfandel?

Bisso Atanassov, Simple Wine, Moscow: I was looking for some information aboutĀ  Zinfandel in the Oxford Companion online today. The OC states that "Zinfandel is one and the same as the Primitivo of southern Italy" and that "DNA 'fingerprinting' subsequently failed to establish a suspected link with the Plavac Mali vine of Croatia". On Zinfandel.org (and in other sources) I read that this is not quite true ("Although Primitivo and Zinfandel are genetically identical within the current testing sensitivity, they are not synonymous.") and that the fore-father of both grapes is a Croatian variety, but not Plavac - it's Crljenak...
