Comments on the Staglin vertical
John Cottrell, London: Having just read your tasting notes for Staglin Family Vineyard 1989-2002 , I see that you say that you regret the wines had been Rollandised (and I was nodding sagely in agreement up to this point). However, averaging your scores for four years either side of Rolland we get 17.6875 (70.75/4) for 1999-2002 and only 17.1875 (68.75/4) for 1995-1998 (I added 0.25 for a plus sign and deducted the same for a minus). Doesn't this mean you preferred the Rollandised wines (by half a point on average)? me: Aha - well spotted, Mr Calculator! My defence for that 0.5 differential in averages is the quality of the...
