Strange grape varieties in stranger places
Charles Taylor, London: Re your article on less well known grape varieties , I'm delighted to hear that you spotted some Grüner Veltliner in NZ, I've always thought it would be worth trying there. But it's Albariño on the North Island that I'm waiting to see. The climate around Auckland is so like that of Galicia, and the upfront liveliness and intensity of the grape would suit the Kiwi (and my) palate. If nobody else does it perhaps I'll just have to chuck in my day job. me: Just like Galicia? Rainfall approaching 1500mm a year? And where are all those granite posts?! Shellfish, I grant you...and in Auckland's case not...
