Looks good, smells good, tastes disgusting

Robert Allison, Monmouthshire: Last night we opened a bottle of Yalumba, The Menzies 1999. It looked bright and clear. Hint of brown to the rim. Smelt fresh and appetising, albeit with woody overtones. Tasted really horrible. Very acidic and tannic. No detectable fruit. We've had duff bottles in the past - corked, hazy, off odours/flavours, but not one which looked and smelt fine. Any ideas? me: Well some wines – far too many, I’d say - are just too tart and tannic. I can’t find a tasting note on this one but I see that Australian wine writer Jeremy Oliver gives it a respectable enough score in his Australian Wine Annual...
