Trevor Stirling, London: With regards to Carignan , I agree that over-cropped Carignan is the sourge of the Midi.  However, there are some wonderful (emerging) examples  of Carignan-based wines that combine fruit, power and balanced tannins.  Sylvain Fadat of Domaine d'Aupilhac is one of the pioneers and I have also had some very tasty examples from Domaine Rabiega, under the rather inelegant name of Caribase. However, these wines do need 4-5 years in bottle to let the tannins soften. me: Thanks for that.
