Do Argentine vintages matter?
Seyla, New York: there any special vintage Malbecs from Argentina to look for or is this of little importance? Thank you. me: I'd say vintage variation is much less important in Argentine Malbecs than in almost any European wine style as the grapes do ripen fairly reliably, even if rainfall can delay this sometimes as in 2004. Hail is the chief problem but this is generally worse for the grower than the drinker. 2002 was a particularly successful vintage but by and large winemaking standards and sophistication are still rising with each successive year so it can be wise to buy as young a wine as possible in some cases.
