High alcohol wines - here to stay?

Steve Dutton, Germany: I think the battle of low alcohol has been pretty much lost in this part of America [he has just spent four weeks in California , mainly the Central Coast].  Only one of the many wines we tried (an Au Bon Climat Chardonnay ) had less than 14% alcohol. Stephen Hall Pinot Noir had 15.5%.  A Turley Zin (Ueberroth Vineyard, I believe), 16.3%.  Most fascinating was a wine from a small, artisanal producer, Lenne Calodo . It was a white Rhone blend (80% Viognier, 20% Marsanne or Rousanne, I forget which). It had a nice nose of honeysuckle, citrus, and some minerality in the backround. On the palate the...
