Why would an old Alsace Riesling gain weight once opened?

Arthur Black, National Wine & Spirits, Indianapolis, IN: A few nights ago I opened a magnum of Zind Humbrecht 1983 Brand Riesling Vendange Tardive and witnessed a tactile impression enigma that I haven't been able to make sense of. At first nose, the wine was rather primary and youthful despite its age, but the mouth was dry and thinner than I anticipated. Frankly, the mouthfeel was very disappointing, verging on a sort of diluted and hollow characteristic, lacking any degree of notable extract (even more strange, considering the producer).
