So glad to see this dog-grape is still having its day in the purple pages ! I think it can't be emphasized enough the dramatic contrast between properly ripe and well-vinified Carignan and all the rest. You mention how much of it smells "rank", indeed I could think of more specific and even less flattering descriptions. I believe the sources of the problem are twofold: under-ripeness, but also in this variety’s reductive proclivities. (And let's face it, the bulk of Carignan was always too over-cropped to fully ripen and then was vinified in tank or cement vats.) You write...
