Is growers' champagne necessarily more variable?

M English, Hertfordshire:   In terms of regularity of blend, I wondered whether small growers were more constrained (by limited numbers of separate tanks, the need to blend whatever is available and create space for the new harvest, the lack of a second wine) than the major brands - or do such factors apply equally? And are there cheaper/more expensive champagne corks?  Might glue between the layers affect taste? Incidentally, we called - quite unfairly - unannounced on a few growers in early autumn 2003 and were on the whole greeted courteously and helpfully.  I think...
