What's with Merlot nowadays?
8 Feb 2006 by JR
Danny Jurmann, Twickenham: Dear Jancis and Julia, I used to think that Merlot, along with Sauvignon Blanc, was one of those grapes I would recognise easily but now I am not so sure.  Merlot in my supermarket always seemed to be full on, very rich and smooth. Jammy describes it well (but then I think jammy is a technical term so maybe not).  I did not like it much, except as [an ingredient in] a blend.  These days the Merlots seem to be a lot more subtle and I am enjoying them.  So my question is: what has changed?  Is it a New World v Old World thing or has Merlot production changed?...
